Kathryn
grew up in South Africa and left there when she was 25. Having just got married to her husband, Nick, they moved to the USA. Nick and Kathryn lived in the USA for 32 years. In 2019, having realized how much time they were spending in BC, they relocated to Vancouver Island and now live in Central Saanich.
Over the years Kathryn had occasion to live in Europe and all over the US. That gave her further opportunity to take art classes, workshops, study at museums and get a good exposure to different cultures and societies.
In the mid 1990’s the couple moved to Portland, Oregon. For about 16 years Kathryn was a successful decorative painter and muralist, and believes this wandering journey has made her a better artist.
“From my earliest days of doodling in my school books to present, I love to draw. I love line and intense colors. Through my many adventures I have seen my art grow. I started off with colored pencil drawings and pen and ink drawings. I then fell in love with soft pastel and created impressionist work. From the 1990’s on I did a lot of mural work, and mixed media.”
Kathryn currently immerses herself in the world of digital art and mixed media painting. With the debut of the iPad, a whole new world opened up for her. She finds it an incredibly versatile and powerful new medium to create art.
“I love being creative and stimulated by this new medium. I am now able to combine my love of technology (pixels) with paint.” The result is a collage of layered art, created using the newest art form of digital painting and traditional art.
Kathryn is one of the early adapters of using an iPad to create art. She will often create an archival reproduction and add mixed media to create a new version of the original digital art.
A new part of her creative outlet now includes photography. Her interests range from macro, to wildlife and birds in flight. She is now multiple award winner for her photography both locally in Victoria, BC and internationally.
'My creative journey is continuing and always interesting"
